A unique geological landscape, a major source of inspiration for the painter.
The Bibémus quarries, located just 6 km from Aix-en-Provence, offer a unique immersion into the creative world of the painter Paul Cezanne.
This rocky plateau, once exploited for its ochre stone, became the artist’s open-air studio. There, Cezanne created 11 oil paintings and 16 watercolors, including the world-famous work “The Red Rock.” (“Le rocher rouge”, 1895). Today, this remarkable site offers exclusive guided tours, inviting visitors to explore the history of the quarries, their fascinating geology, and the deep connection between Cezanne and this landscape—one that foreshadowed Cubism.
Thanks to the redevelopment project carried out in 2022 and 2025 by the city of Aix-en-Provence, the Bibémus quarry site now offers enhanced visitor routes, with new paths and in-situ reproductions of Cezanne’s works.
